Action Before Confidence

There’s just no other way around it, you need to take action before confidence can build. I hate to break it to you but there isn’t a magical confidence fairy that comes to sprinkle you with dust after you go to sleep and you wake up confident. Isn’t that the way you envisioned it? Well maybe you don’t believe it will go down like that but you still just sit around wanting to go do something big but waiting until you have some confidence. It doesn’t work that way either.

Be a Con-Man (or Woman)

A Confidence man, or con-man for short, is able to work to be seen as trustworthy and likable. Do you see yourself that way? Do you trust and like yourself? These are big building blocks for self-confidence. You might be wondering if trust is the same as confidence and while they are similar, they have different meanings. Trust is based on a rationale allowing you to trust in something blindly, without any previous experiences. Confidence is built on and requires experiences. Build trust in yourself by thinking about your skills and abilities. Even if you haven’t used them to their fullest in the past, you can still put your trust in them. That’s what trust is. And maybe you don’t see yourself as likable. Here’s a little secret, nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes but that shouldn’t get in the way of you liking yourself. You don’t even have to like all of you. There are things about myself that I don’t care for but I would say that I like myself overall. Work on trusting and liking yourself and the confidence will come.

Build Confidence

The trust you have in your skills, abilities and knowledge will have a major effect on confidence. You know you have the abilities so you must take action. Once you have taken action you will have the experience that confidence is built on. It may sound counter-intuitive but you can build confidence even if you fail at something. The experience of actually trying it is what builds the confidence. You put yourself out there once, you can surely do it again and again. If you sit around waiting for confidence to do something, you are missing out on the only activity that will give you the confidence. You’re putting the cart before the horse which I don’t think ever works out well in any situation.

Take Action

We’ve established the building blocks of confidence are trust and likability. You know you can trust in your abilities, skills, and knowledge and you know that even though you’re not perfect, you like who you are. The only thing you need to do is to take action. There’s nothing holding you back. You don’t need the confidence before making a move, you will get the confidence after you do it. What is an action you will take right now to build your confidence and move you forward towards your goals?
